AB1705
This is a controversial and important bill that will affect many community college students and their ability to access a STEM pathway for study into a STEM career. All thoughts on this bill are my own and not necessarily reflect the will or position of my college, district., or any institutions I may be affiliated.
I will start this discussion on this BLOG by simply recording events that have been made public via social media and any other public publications. But will continue to remark to bring awareness as time proceeds. The 2024 to 2025 academic year will be the last year we will be offering courses like Precalculus and Trigonometry at our colleges throughout the State of California which are essential stepping stones to enter a Calculus 1 course and beyond for a successful completion of a STEM program.

This is a presentation on the effects of AB705 during the Fall 2019 term for Statistics Students which illustrates what we should expect under AB1705. Unfortunately, campuses closed under Covid 19 in Spring 2020 and the data is now corrupt as assessment (Proctoring) was highly inconsistent. Assessment issues due to asynchronous and synchronous modalities most likely continue to this day.

LACCD BOT (May 4, 2022) failed to support a Motion to Oppose AB1705 unless amended. Instead, we got meaningless language in the AB1705 bill regarding a “special Population” that is not being implemented. You can watch the arguments via Youtube which starts at 58:35. The trustees who failed to oppose AB1705 unless amended are Andra Hoffman, Ernie Moreno, Nichelle Henderson, and Steve Veres.
